Abstract

1481522 Blow-moulding silicones RHONEPOULENC SA 7 Nov 1974 [8 Nov 1973] 48237/74 Heading B5A A hot-vulcanizable silicone elastomer composition is blow-moulded by forcing the unvulcanized composition under pressure into an extruder, extruding a preform thereof at below 50‹ C, blow-moulding the platform in a heated mould and leaving the article in the mould until the desired degree of vulcanization is reached before removing the article formed. The mould may be heated to 100-250‹ C, the dwell-time therein varying from 1-10 minutes at 100‹ C to 5-30 seconds at 250‹ C. A blowing/calibrating mandrel may be used which itself may be heated to 100-200‹ C. The composition may be fed to the extruder by an accumulator system. The composition may comprise a diorgano-polysiloxane rubber of viscosity greater than 1000 poises at 25‹ C and having repeating diorganosiloxy units blocked at each end of the chain by a triorganosiloxy, hydroxyl, or C 1 -C 4 alkoxy group, e.g. a methyl, ethyl, propyl or 3,3,3-trifluoropropyl, vinyl or phenyl, and may also contain fillers, plasticizers, pigments, stabilizers, vulcanizing agents. A plurality of blow-moulds may be mounted on a device reciprocating or rotating about a vertical or horizontal axis.
