Abstract

1504437 Laminates; moulding composite articles DUNLOP Ltd 5 March 1975 [8 March 1974] 10432/74 Headings B5N and B5A A rubber-plastics composite is produced by contacting a vulcanized or vulcanizable polyacrylate rubber with a thermoplastic polyvinylidene fluoride or vinylidene fluoride/tetrafluoroethylene copolymer, fusing at least the contact surface of the thermoplastic material, cooling the thermoplastic material in contact with the polyacrylate rubber, and, when a vulcanizable rubber is used, vulcanizing the rubber prior to solidification of the thermoplastic material. The polyacrylate rubber may be based on polymerized ethyl or butyl acrylate containing a minor amount, e.g. 5% by weight, of polymer units of one or more monomers selected from butadiene, isoprene, acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, 2-chloroethyl acrylate and 2- chloroethyl vinyl ether. The thermoplastic material may be fused by direct heating or by molecular vibration methods, e.g. radio frequency techniques. The rubber and plastics material may be bonded together in a mould, the thermoplastic material optionally being injection moulded on to the polyacrylate rubber.
