Abstract

1503914 Sponsons R D HAWKINS 9 May 1975 [9 May 1974] 20418/74 Heading B7A A watercraft has a main hull 3, an inner hull 4 both of glass fibre reinforced plastics material and a sponson 2 attached to each of its side walls 3 by means of a rigid tie structure including a transverse sheet member extending across the main hull 3. In one construction (Fig. 3) the tie structure comprises a plywood, metal or glass reinforced plastics sheet 14 extending across the hull and fastened to wooden longitudinal strips 15 and the upper part of each sponson is attached by a bracket 16 to the respective strip 15. Instead of the brackets 16, hinges may be used. In an alternative construction, Fig. 4 (not shown), one end of a tie member (20) of metal or glass reinforced plastics material is attached to the mounting bracket (16) of a respective sponson and the other end is attached to the bottom of the inner hull skin which then constitutes the transverse sheet. A plurality of such tie members (20) may be used along each side.
