Abstract

1503841 Winding helices WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 5 Jan 1976 [10 Jan 1975] 135/76 Heading B3E [Also in Division G6] In a method of winding a solid spacer w re 13 around a nuclear fuel rod 12, the spacer wire being flattened at predetermined locations 25 on the fuel rod, the spacer wire is paid out from a carriage 35 moving axially along the fuel rod while the fuel rod is rotated for winding the wire on the fuel rod, the wire 13 being flattened by means on the carriage 35 before it is paid out to be wound on the fuel rod. The spacer wire 13 is flattened to such an extent that the coolant flow cross-section, within a fuel assembly comprising a plurality of such fuel rods within a shroud, between two adjacent outer fuel rods and the shroud is equal to that between three adjacent inner fuel rods. The spacer wire 13 may be welded at one or both ends of the fuel rod 12, and intermittently along its length. The rotation of the fuel rod 12 is synchronized with the horizontal motion of the carriage 35 along a lead screw 34, thus causing the wire 13 to form a predetermined pitch angle on to the fuel rod 12. A pair of forming rollers 36 is located within the carriage 35 for forming the round wire into an elliptical or other flattened shape at precise intervals. An actuator mechanism 37 is attached to one of the rollers 36 having a movable axis in order to apply the pressure necessary to cold form the wire. The other roller 36 has a fixed axis and is driven in synchronisation with the rotating fuel rod.
