Abstract

1503692 Removal of SO 2 from flue gas SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 3 March 1975 [5 March 1974] 8684/75 Heading C1A SO 2 is removed from flue gas which also contains O 2 by passing the flue gas through a reactor at between 200‹ and 600‹ C. having separate inlet and outlet ducts for, respectively, flue gas and reducing gas, the ducts each being fitted with valves, and the reactor containing an acceptor of copper and/or copper oxide on a refractory carrier, until the acceptor is loaded with SO 2 , after which the acceptor is heated to between 200‹ and 600‹ C. to regenerate the acceptor material while simultaneously passing a reducing gas comprising H 2 and a diluent through the reactor. The flue gas at this stage is passed through a second reactor with a Cu/copper oxide containing acceptor. The process is characterized in that during regeneration of the loaded acceptor in the first reactor, the valves in the inlet and outlet ducts for the reducing gas of the first reactor are open, while the corresponding valves in the inlet and outlet ducts for the flue gas are closed, such that a stream of flue gas is passed through that part of the flue gas inlet and outlet ducts of this reactor located outside the closed flue gas valves as viewed from the reactor.
