Abstract

1344934 Gas separation SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 19 April 1971 [26 Feb 1970] 22433/71 Headings B1F and B1L [Also in Division Cl] Sulhpur dioxide is removed from a gas stream by a process in which a solid acceptor for sulphur dioxide is held in separate segments of a rotating element each of which segments is separated from adjacent segments by gas-impervious walls and is carried by each complete rotation of said element sequentially first through an acceptance zone where the acceptor contacts a flowing stream of sulphur dioxide-containing gas, then through a regeneration zone where the acceptor contacts a flowing stream of a regenerating gas such as hydrogen, methane or ethane and finally through a purging zone where the acceptor conmixture thereof, each segment may be carried may be steam, nitrogen, carbon dioxide or a mixture thereof. ach segment may be carried through an oxidation zone after purging but prior to again contacting the So 2 -containing gas. The acceptor may be Cu, CuO, V 2 O 5 or an alkali metal oxide supported on alumina or silica. In apparatus described which covers only the removal and regeneration steps, the gas stream is passed via a pipe 10 into a rotating element 13 having a plurality of segments 12 separated by gas-impermeable walls 15 and each loaded with a solid So 2 -absorbent 20. A regenerating gas is fed through pipe 27 and the arrangement is such that each sector alternately contacts the So 2 -containing gas and the regenerating gas through permeable walls 18 and 19.
