Abstract

1503228 Tool for applying a compressive force AMP Inc 17 Sept 1976 [22 Oct 1975] 43246/75 Heading B4C A tool for applying a compressive force to a workpiece comprises a working member 3, a back-up member 9 and means for urging working member 3 towards back-up member 9, the means including a rod 2 mounted for reciprocal movement towards and away from working member 3 which is mounted for reciprocal movement coaxially with rod 2, the rod being connected to working member 3 by a toggle joint link 4 comprising a link 51 pivotally connected to rod 2 and to a second link 6 which is also pivotally connected to working member 3, toggle link 4 having a projecting pin 20 at the connection point of links 5, 6, and a release member 15 reciprocally movable parallel to the path of rod 2 and having a surface 18 engageable with projecting pin 20 on upward movement to when link 4 is straight so as to urge the link to its bent position. Preferably the link is biased to its straight position by a torsion spring 22 and held in its bent position by the pressure of a projection 16 of release member 15 on a second pin 21 of toggle 4. A workpiece is placed over back-up 9 whilst the toggle is bent. A pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 13 is operated to lower release member 15. Allowing toggle 4 to straighten. A second cylinder 1 is then operated to press working member downwards the force being transmitted via the straight toggle. Cylinders 1 and 13 are then operated to first raise member 3 and then bend the toggle link. As the link will only transmit a large force when it is straight it prevents damage to an operator's finger or other thick object erroneously placed over back-up member 9 as over sized will prevent the toggle from being straightened. Members 3, 9 may be a crimping die and an anvil, respectively, in order to crimp electrical terminals to electrical conductors, or a punch and a support respectively, in order to insert force fit electrical terminal posts in holes in a printed circuit board.
