Abstract

1502943 Antenna and radome DECCA Ltd and R H J CARY 9 May 1975 [22 March 1974] 12847/74 Heading H4A A microwave antenna combined with a radome (i.e. a radant) comprises an outermost skin 9 of low loss dielectric material separated from a slotted antenna by an intermediate spacer 10 of insulating cellular material. As shown, a Doppler radant comprises a conductive plate 3 with an array of slots 1, 2, a conductive plate 4, and conductive tracks 5, 6 disposed between layers 7, 8 (members 3-8 thus constituting a triplate transmission line). The intermediate spacer 10, arranged to have a permittivity approaching that of air by using polyurethane foam, may be bonded to the plate 3, which may be copper, with the aid of a thin fibreglass layer 11 having spaces in register with the slots 1, 2 and machined channels (12, 13, Fig. 2, not shown) in the spacer 10. The layers of the radant may be bonded together by adhesive, unwanted modes being inhibited by plated through holes (not shown). Alternatively, layers 3-8 may be secured by rivets positioned to inhibit the unwanted modes. The skin 9 may be used to protectively secure the radant to a mounting (not shown).
