Abstract

1501481 Seed planter monitor DICKEY JOHN CORP 7 Oct 1975 40952/75 Heading AID [Also in Division G4] A monitoring apparatus for a seed planting machine including a dispensing drum 20, 40- 43 for delivering seeds one after another comprises means 16 for sensing the number of seeds which should be delivered, means 17 for sensing the number of seeds which are actually delivered and a counting apparatus 14 which determines when one number exceeds theother by a selected percentage and illuminates three lamps to indicate whether the actual number is high, low or normal. As described the apparatus monitors a multi-row planter. For each row there is a dispensing drum assembly with a notched disc 43 which separates the seeds and is driven through gearing 46. Coupled to the gearing is an apertured plate 57 with a photocell 56 delivery pulses for each seed that should be delivered. At the end of each delivery tube 50 there is a further photocell delivering pulses for each seed. The two pulse trains for each row in turn are fed to an up-down counter via suitable dividers. When the count is zero a centre lamp is lit; when the count reaches first values one or other of the outer lamps is lit and when the count reaches second higher values the centre lamp is extinguished. In an automatic mode the row sensors are selected in turn automatically; a seven segment display indicates the last row selected and the lamps indicate the efficiency of the seed planting in that row. In a manual mode the rows are selected in turn when a manual switch is pushed; the display indicates the row selected and the lamps indicate the efficiency of planting in the selected row. If the actual number of seeds being planted in any one or more rows falls below a set level an alarm sounds and the display indicates the faulty row or shows zero if more than one row. The circuit (Figs. 4A, B, C not shown) includes switching for selecting the levels of which the lamps operate and for different numbers of rows (according to the planter).
