Abstract
1501460 Magnesia refractories VEITSCHER MAGNESITWERKE-ACTIEN-GES 26 Feb 1975 [26 Feb 1974] 8085/75 Headings CIJ and C1A An unsintered magnesia-based refractory composition comprises (a) a magnesia component or a material which can be calcined to yield a magnesia component having a CaO/SiO 2 weight ratio of at least 1À87 and containing, by weight of the magnesia component, at most 0À7% SiO 2 , at most 6% CaO, at least 3% R 2 O 3 (defined) and at least 2% Fe 2 O 3 , and (b) a ZrO 2 -containing material having a ZrO 2 content of at least 90% and/or a Zr compound calculable to a solid residue containing at least 90 wt. per cent ZrO 2 , the total quantity of the material and/or solid residue being at least sufficient, on sintering of the composition, to bind in the form of calcium zirconate the amount of CaO potentially necessary for the formation of dicalcium ferrite and any other CaO-R 2 O 3 compound corresponding to the R 2 O 3 content as well as any potentially free CaO. R 2 O 3 is defined as the Fe 2 O 3 and any Al 2 O 3 , Cr 2 O 3 , B 2 O 3 and Mn 2 O 3 impunties. The refractory composition may contain up to 50% chrome ore or magnesia-chrome sinter based on the total weight of refractory composition. Refractory bricks or blocks may be made from the sintered or unsintered composition, and in forming the bricks or blocks, use may be made of a chemical binder or a tar or pitch binder. The unsintered refractory materials may be impregnated with a carbon carrier of high carbon content. In the examples, blocks or bricks are made from magnesia components and 3 or 4% zirconia.
