Abstract

1501443 Reciprocating pumps J KORSGAARD 28 Jan 1976 [28 Jan 1975] 4011/75 Heading F1A [Also in Division B6] In a book binding machine, a pump supplies glue to an applicator tube which is oscillated to and fro on a carriage as the latter is moved across a book cover. In a first embodiment, Fig. 9, the pump comprises a cylindrical portion 122 mounting a continuously rotatable sleeve 123 with a port 127 which provides intermittent communication between two channels 128, 189 in the cylindrical portion, one leading to a glue reservoir 120, the other to a screw cup 125. The sleeve 123 supports a cam 135 which transmits rotational drive via a spring plate 137 and projection 136 to the cup. The cup is thus screwed on to the portion 122 forcing glue through an associated heated applicator tube 126, until the latter hits a stop when spring plate 137 yields and cup 125 is rotated back to its initial position by a spring. A heating element 133 is provided. In a second embodiment, Fig. 7, a reciprocable plunger pump 100 is used. A solenoid 108 is pulsed causing a heated applicator tube 104 to be moved between stop plates 96, 98, at the same time reciprocating the plunger 19 via linkage 101, 102 to pump glue to the tube. The plunger and a glue reservoir may also be heated.
