Abstract

1500972 Electro-plating chromium VINTAGE CURACAO N V 17 Jan 1975 [23 Jan 1974 12 June 1974 29 Oct 1974] 2221/75 Heading C7B Cr is electro-plated from an aqueous chromic acid/sulphate bath which contains the reaction product of an aqueous equinolar mixture of dichloroacetic acid and nitrilotriacetic acid together with a Sr(NO 3 ) 2 /Sr(OH) 2 buffer, which is a complex containing Sr and dichloracetic acid residue. The bath may also contain SiF 6 , alkali metals e.g. K or Na, and Sr. A bath temperature of 40- 70‹C at a c.d. of 40-1000 A/dm<SP>2</SP> is specified. A steel substrate may be precleaned with a wet glass powder blast in which the water contains an inhibitor, and may subsequently be heated to expel hydrogen from the plated layer. Electrolyte agitation reduces hydrogen absorption. The Cr plate has a pearly low-friction surface with an obtainable Vickers hardness of 1200-1500.
