Abstract

1500102 Miscellaneous picking-up tools; electrical contact removing tool ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 15 Jan 1976 01554/76 Headings B4C and B4W [Also in Divisions H2 and G2] A connector member 10 comprises a shell 12 containing a rear fixed support portion 16 and a removable front support portion 14 and a plurality of elements 18 mounted in the rear portion 16, the s' ell having resilient retention fingers 58, 58<SP>1</SP> engaging the front portion through shoulders 56, 56<SP>1</SP>, the fingers being accessible through clearance spaces 52, 52<SP>1</SP> between the shell and the front portion and a slot 66 extending from the front face of the front portion to the rear face. In the embodiment (Figs. 1 and 2) the rear portion 16 has forwardly extending portions 20 and the front portion 14 fits slidably between these portions; passages 30 on the front portion 14 and 34 on the rear portion 16 receive the elements 18 terminating a fibre optic bundle 42. The rear portion may contain electrical contacts 46, or all contacts may be fibre optic contacts in which case the. front portion would completely cover the rear portion. A tool 80 in (Fig. 3) for extracting the front portions 14 from the connector member 10 comprises a shaft, 82 having a handle 84, an arm 92, whose configuration is complementary to that of slot 66, and a U-shaped element 94 rotatably mounted on the shaft 82, by a retaining ring 100, and is biased by spring 104. To remove the front portion from the connector using the tool, the arm 92 is inserted in the slot 96 with the two legs 110 of the element 94 entering the slots 52, 52<SP>1</SP> and lifting the fingers 58, 58<SP>1</SP>, freeing the front portion 14; the tool is turned by 90 degrees, the arm 92 engaging the bottom of recess 70 and then pulled outwards to extract the front portion 14. The arm 92 may only extend in one direction, instead of two, and the element 94 may be fixedly mounted on shaft 82, the spring 104 being omitted.
