Abstract
1499722 Aerobic treatment of sewage DRAVCO CORP 20 Jan 1975 [22 Feb 1974] 2413/75 Heading ClC [Also in Division B1] Sewage is purified by mechanical or bacteriological filtration by flowing upwards or downwards through a bed 5 of sand, anthracite, gravel or plastics spheres of 1-6 mm. diameter, the bed being 3-20 feet deep and having buried therein elongated lengths of fritted glass or perforate pipes 19 connected to a riser 23 and serving to remove accumulated nitrogen, air, CH 4 , H 2 S or CO 2 from the bed. Pipes 19 may bleed the gas off continuously or intermittently through valve 25, or air or water is injected into pipes 19 to force the gas to the bed surface (Fig. 1, not shown). Alternatively (Fig. 3) the air or water is injected into a lower set of pipes 33 and the gas bled off through upper pipes 19 and valve 25. Valves 25 and 39 may be opened automatically by a float switch or electrodes, which detect a rise in the level of sewage above the bed when the bed is clogged by accumulated gas. The incoming sewage from pipe 9 may come from a settling tank or activated sludge plant.
