Abstract
1499629 Electrical connections STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 9 Sept 1976 37385/76 Heading H2E A method of providing a microwave connector on a bonded stripline structure includes the steps of forming corresponding recesses on the bonding surfaces of two dielectric sheets, bonding the sheets together, metal plating external surfaces of the bonded structure, and subsequently machining the plated bonded structure to obtain access to the cavity formed by the recesses. In a first embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2, a T- shaped recess 4a, 4b is formed in the bonding surface of each dielectric sheet 1, 7, a terminal pin 5 being placed in one recess leg 4b. The pin 5 has a metal tab 5a which is soldered, or otherwise permanently attached, to a circuit pattern 2 on sheet 1. Bonding of the sheets 1, 7 is effected by a bonding agent 6, tongue portions 3, 9 of the sheets 1, 7 then being removed by cutting along edge 1a to expose pin 5. The remainder of a coaxial connector assembly (10) (Fig. 4, not shown) is firmly attached over the pin 5 by screws (11) and dowels (12). In a second embodiment (Figs. 5 and 6), recesses 23, 24 of different diameters are provided in sheets 21, 22, recess 23 having a circuit pattern 25 therearound. After bonding and plating, the sheets 21, 22 are drilled to convert the recesses 23, 24 into through holes, a terminal pin 26 having a tab portion 26a being inserted therein. The tab portion 26a is soldered to circuit pattern 26a and the assembly 27 attached to the sandwich structure. Potting compound 28 is employed to fill the remainder of the hole, which may be covered with metal foil or plate to complete the ground plane formed on the opposed surfaces of the dielectric sheets.
