Abstract

1499373 Control of D.C. motors LINDE AG 26 March 1975 [4 April 1974] 12587/75 Addition to 1380015 Heading H2J [Also in Division B7] A drive system particularly for a fork-lift truck comprises: a shunt-wound electric motor 22, 23 arranged to drive an output shaft 7<SP>1</SP> through an infinitely-variable transmission; current-varying means for varying the current flowing through the field winding 23 of the electric motor; and control means which controls the current-varying means in dependence on the power transmitted by the transmission in such manner that when the power transmitted reduces, the current flowing through the field winding 23 is increased and the speed of the electric motor consequently decreases. As illustrated, the infinitely-variable transmission comprises a variable-displacement hydraulic motor 7 connected by fluid lines 3, 4 with a variable-displacement hydraulic pump 2 driven through a shaft 24 by the electric motor. The current-varying means comprises a variable resistor 30 disposed in the electric line 29 leading to the field winding 23. The control means comprises control fluid lines 8, 9 connected to respective fluid lines 3, 4 and leading to a control valve 10 which connects that one of the two fluid lines 8, 9 which carries the higher pressure to a control line 14 leading to a servo-cylinder 15. A piston 32 of the servo-cylinder 15 is connected by a rod 16 to the variable resistor 30. When the pressure in fluid line 3 or 4 reduces, piston 32 is moved by biasing spring 31 so that the rod 16 reduces the resistance of the variable resistor 30. The increased electric current in the field winding 23 consequent upon the reduction in the resistance of the variable resistor 30 causes a reduction in the speed of the electric motor. A control lever 33 is operative to adjust the electric motor speed to a maximum irrespective of the load on hydraulic motor 7, for example when the motor 22 drives other powerconsuming devices, whereby operation of members 33, 34 overrides the control effect of members 15, 16, 31, 32. Members 33, 34 are also used to set the maximum desired speed of motors 7, 22, after which the motor 22 automatically controls the speed of the pump 2 whilst the transmission is adjusted to obtain a desired speed of the motor 7, whereby members 2, 7 always operate in the best efficiency range. In a further embodiment (not shown), the infinitely-variable transmission takes the form of an infinitely-variable V-belt transmission.
