Abstract

1499325 Reciprocating pumps BESPAK INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 March 1975 [28 March 1974 23 July 1974] 13789/74 and 32462/74 Heading F1A A container-mounted atomizer pump comprises two coaxial cylinders 15, 16 of different effective cross-sectional areas and respective bucket pistons 22, 50 defining between them a pumping chamber, depression of an actuator button 28 moving piston 22 downwardly and the pressure developed in the pumping chamber moving piston 50 downwardly against spring 59, the stroke of piston 50 being greater than that of piston 22 due to the smaller effective cross-sectional area of piston 50 which slides on a fixed projection 14 in cylinder 16. Valve 35 in piston 22 has a stem 37 which engages projection 14 during the downward stroke to open valve 35, discharge then taking place from the pumping chamber via valve 35 and nozzle 30, piston 50 being moved upwardly by spring 59. On release of button 28, valve 35 remains open during initial upward movement of pistons 22, 50 by spring 59, causing liquid in nozzle 30 to be sucked back into the pumping chamber. Valve 35 closes when stem 37 moves away from projection 14, and liquid is then drawn from the container via dip tube 18, ports 19 and the lip 51 of piston 50. The container is vented via port 13. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the upper piston (122) has a valve-member (137) on a stem (135) with transverse fingers (148, 149) which, during downward movement of the piston (122) engage a step (161) between coaxial cylinders of different diameters housing the upper and lower pistons, thereby opening the valve for discharge to take place. The lower, spring-loaded piston (150) has a through passage controlled by a valve (153).
