Abstract

1499278 Sintered carbide cutting tools FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 23 April 1976 [5 May 1975] 16539/76 Heading C7D A sintered powder compact useful for making a cutting tool and comprising a titanium carbide phase held in a binding alloy which constitutes 10-50 wt. per cent of the mass of the compact is made by (a) blending together titanium carbide powder, nickel powder, molybdenum carbide powder as Mo 2 C or MoC, and aluminium powder, with or without chromium powder, the titanium carbide powder comprising 50-90 wt. per cent of the total powders, the molybdenum carbide powder comprising 25-70% of the Mo 2 C/MoC, Ni, Al and Cr powders, the aluminium powder comprising 2À5-7À5 wt. per cent of the Mo 2 C/MoC, Ni, Al and Cr powders, and the chromium powder comprising 0-10 wt. per cent of said powders, (b) milling the blended powders and passing them through a sieve, (c) compacting the sieved powders at 16,000-24,000 psi and (d) preparing closed graphite trays and inserting the compact therein while evacuating the furnace holding the trays to less than one micron of mercury, and sintering the compact in the trays at 1350-1400‹C for about one hour. The titanium carbide powder usually is of particle size 3À5-4À5 microns, the nickel and Mo 2 C/MoC powders of 2À5-3À5 microns and the Al powder of under 325 mesh.
