Abstract

1498058 Transporting bulk cargo MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK and KOBE SEI. KOSHO KK 22 April 1975 [24 April 1974] 16687/75 Heading B7A [Also in Division B1] A slurry of iron ore and water in vessel 1, which may be a ships hull, is subjected to suction to remove water by a duct 4 connected to apertures 2 via valves 3, each of which is controlled by a respective pressure monitor 3a, which closes the valve in response to a rise in pressure adjacent the corresponding aperture to prevent air being drawn into duct 4 through a crack in the partly dewatered slurry overlying that aperture. The valve is automatically opened again when a further rise in pressure indicates that the crack has closed, e.g. due to rolling of the ship. Duct 4 leads into a chamber 5 connected to respective pumps 9, 12 for evacuating air and water. Water level monitor 14 controls the pumps and valves 6, 7, 10, 13, so that pump 9 applies suction to duct 4 and pump 12 drains water from chamber 5, with valve 6 closed, for alternate periods. Valves are electromagnetic, but valves 3 may have manual overrides. Apertures 2 lead to the undersides of filters.
