Abstract

1497886 Making cylindrical castings; moulds HITACHI METALS Ltd 13 June 1975 25463/75 Headings B3A and B3F A process for manufacturing a cylindrical casting comprises casting the article with an ingate 3 contiguous with a portion 4 of increased thickness extending entirely around a cylindrical surface which is to be machined, ingate 3 having its minimum cross-sectional area where it joins portion 4, removing ingate 3 and machining the cylindrical surface so that portion 4 is removed. The article shown is a pipe joint which is threaded by a tap (7, Fig. 3, not shown) which threading removes portion 4. P-P is the breaking plane, and angle a is preferably between 30 and 120 degrees. In a second embodiment, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) the ingate (11) and portion (10) of increased thickness are on the outside of the article.
