Abstract
149,709. Stout, W. B. Feb. 17, 1919. Cars and cabins.-An aeroplane in which substantially all the detrimental surfaces are located within the camber of the planes, as in Specification 149,708, is provided with a slightly projecting transparent hood, transparent panels in the floor, and means for controlling the pressure of air or oxygen within the enclosed cockpit, manually or automatically. Fig. 3 shows the general arrangements. The hood 8, hinged at 11, is rendered air-tight by clamping it down upon a gasket 14, while another gasket 12 guards the hinge. A screwed manhole 17 in the floor provides an additional means of entry into the cockpit. Transparent panels 9 are fitted into the floor in front and on each side of the aviator's seat 7. The supply of air from a compressor 19 is controlled by a valve 21 to enter the cockpit either directly through a pipe 22, or by way of an automatic pressure-regulating diaphragm valve 24. Similar control arrangements are fitted to a pipe 34 in connexion with an oxygen cylinder 33*; to an exhaust pipe 31; and to an auxiliary air-supplying means consisting of a funnel 38, which can be turned by a hand-wheel 41 to face in any direction.
