Abstract

1,075,745. Air cushion vehicles. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Dec. 10, 1965 [Dec. 16, 1964], No. 51149/64. Heading B7K. An air cushion vehicle is provided with means for reducing dynamic variations in cushion pressure, said means comprising a gas-flow connection between a space occupied by cushion gas and a region of gas at datum pressure and means for directing a curtain of moving gas into said connection so as to control gas flow along the path provided by the connection. A vehicle 1 is supported on a cushion 3 enclosed by a flexible skirt 13 forming a plenum chamber, air being delivered to the plenum chamber through a duct 12 which is formed with a branch duct 19 which connects with a duct 4 leading from the plenum chamber to atmosphere. The duct 19 is formed with a valve mechanism 5 under the control of the pilot whereby the strength of an air curtain (6, Fig. 2, not shown) issuing from duct 19 into duct 4 may be varied to adjust the flow of cushion air to atmosphere through duct 4 in response to dynamic variations in cushion pressure. The duct 4 may exhaust rearwardly to achieve a propulsion effect. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the duct 19 supplies air to an apertured plate (36) which forms an annular air curtain (39) directed around an aperture in the top surface of the plenum chamber, the plate being axially movable whereby the curtain may control the amount of air flowing from the cushion through the aperture. In a further embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) the cushion is contained by an inflatable skirt (52) which discharges a peripheral air curtain (53) and the cushion pressure control valve comprises a gated device of movable plates (63). In a still further embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the cushion is contained only by a peripheral air curtain (82) and the control valve comprises an axially movable bullet (91) within a circular duct (89) which in turn co-operates with a bell-mouth axiallymovable duct (88) extending into the cushion space.
