Abstract

1496827 Retractive switches WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 21 April 1975 [26 April 1974] 16350/75 Heading H1N A switch which may be convertible from normally-closed to normally-open condition, and vice versa, comprises a plunger 11 having oppositely directed camming surfaces 43 and 45 which cooperate with spaced follower surfaces 47 and 49 of an aperture in a contact carrier 25. to reciprocate the latter in directions substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the plunger. As shown a spring-loaded contact bridge 31 is normally held away from two fixed contacts on supports 27, which extend out of housing 7 as terminals (29, Figs. 2 and 3, not shown), and depression of plunger 11 against spring 51 urges the carrier 25 to the left to allow 31 to bridge the fixed contacts. Should a normally-closed switch be required the plunger 11 is rotated through 180 degrees to bring the cams 43 and 45 into the broken-line positions, carrier 25 and contact bridge 31 then being normally in the closed positions shown by broken lines. This condition provides positive opening actuation by cam 43 and may be used to break welded contacts.
