Abstract

1495687 Decorating a polymer coating EI DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 26 Sept 1975 [27 Sept 1974 (2)] 39550/75 Heading B2E A heat-stable polymer coating is decorated by applying a composition comprising a heatstable polymer and a liquid carrier either under or as a subsequent coat over an oxidation catalyst composition which is arranged in a decorative pattern, the catalysts or its decomposition or oxidation product diffusing into the coating and, by reacting with the components thereof, by catalysing reactions within the coating or by adding colour itself, rendering the pattern visible within the coating upon baking. The polymer may be a silicone, polysulphide, poly (p-hydroxybenzoic acid), polysulphone, polyimide, polyamide, polysulphonate, polysulphonamide, PTFE, poly (monochlorotrifluoroethylene), tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene copolymer or tetrafluoroethylene-perfluoro alkyl vinyl ether copolymer. The polymer composition may contain colourants (particularly a copolymer of an unsaturaled acid, such as methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/methacrylic acid copolymer, which produces a carbonaceous residue), antioxidants, pigments, glass or metal flakes, and mica particles coated with metal oxides. The oxidation catalyst may be an acetate, caproate, caprylate, isodecanoate, linoleate, naphthenate, nitrate, octoate, oleate, palmitate, ricinoleate, soyate, stearate or tallate of Bi, Ce, Co, Fe, Pb, Mn or Ni and may be applied to a substrate by "intaglio" offset printing or silk screening. The substrate, which may be aluminium or glass, may be pre-treated by phosphating, chromating, flame-spraying of metal or metal oxide, frit-coating, grit blasting, or acid- or alkali-treating. A primer coating, particularly of a silica containing perfluorocarbon polymer, may be applied under or over the catalyst composition by spraying, roller coating, dipping or doctor blading. The heat-stable polymer surface may comprise part of a frying pan, bearing, valve, wire, metal foil, boiler, pipe, ship bottom, oven liner, iron soleplate waffle iron, ice cube tray, snow shovel, saw, file, drill, hopper or mould.
