Abstract

1494214 Shaft seals FEDERAL-MOGUL CORP 10 Dec 1974 [19 Dec 1973 (2) 13 Nov 1974] 53470/74 Heading F2B Hydrodynamic grooves 82, 126 are produced in lip seals 35, of difficultly mouldable material, e.g. PTFE, by operations performed on a preformed washer or billet. The grooves may be produced by coining the washers at very high pressures or by machining the billet 132 in a lathe. The coining member 80 may have a flat siirface 81 which is proud of its grooved surface. The washers are trimmed, by means of cutting edges 44 and 48, as they are coined. As the washers are assembled within their casings (10, Fig. 7, not shown), they are simultaneously cold formed, so that the grooved portions (21) extend frusto-conically. The casings (10) may be provided with sealant coatings (92, Fig. 10, not shown). Reference is made to the divisional Specification 1,494,215, which claims the manufacturing dies.
