Abstract

1494087 Magnetic heads DATA RECORDING INSTRUMENT CO Ltd 22 Oct 1975 [29 Oct 1974] 46816/74 Heading G5R [Also in Division H1] A magnetic recording and reproducing head comprises a substrate 3 having a magnetic part 4 and a non-magnetic part 5, a magnetic head core 7, 19 on the non-magnetic part 5 and having a transducing gap, a coupling winding 9 formed on the substrate 3 and extending through the transducing gap, at 15, and over the magnetic part 4, at 17, and a multilayer transformer winding 23, 26, 29, 32 formed on the magnetic part 4 and inductively coupled to the head core winding 9, 15, 17. The substrate 3 may comprise a ceramic part 5 glass bonded 6 to a magnetic ferrite part 4. The head unit 1 is formed by deposition on part 5 of magnetic Ni-Fe layers 7, 19, electrically insulating layers 8, 18 and an electrically conductive layer 9. A rear part of layer 19 contacts layer 7 to form a channel receiving a part 15 of conductor layer 9 which forms a single turn head coil having the part 17 on ferrite substrate part 4 coupled to a magnetic core 11 of the transformer 2. The multilayer transformer winding is formed by successive deposition of electrically insulating layers (not shown) alternating with electrically conductive layers 23, 26, 29, 32. Each of layers 23, 26, 29, 32 is formed as a rectangular multiturn spiral around limb 12 of transformer core 11, the spirals being connected in series with one another to form the transformer winding with a centre tap. In a modification, a second substrate carries part or all of core 11, e.g. the upper bridge part and portions of each limb 12, 13, and also carries winding layers 29, 32 and is positioned face-to-face with substrate 3 with the various depositions therebetween. The core 11 may be formed by arc plasma deposition and the layers 23, 26, 29, 32 may be thin films, formed by vacuum or sputter deposition or fired-on thick films; the transducer gap forming layer 9 may be about 2 micrometers thick. A common substrate may carry a plurality of heads and associated transformers to form a multi-track assembly.
