Abstract

1493459 Prosthesis derived from umbilical cord I I DARDIK and H DARDIK 7 July 1975 [23 Jan 1975 1 April 1975] 28540/75 Heading A5R A prosthesis, e.g. a vein, artery or patch, is formed by removing one of the principal blood vessels from an umbilical cord, subjecting a segment of said blood vessels to a tanning treatment, for example by contacting it with an aldehyde selected from glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde, dialdehyde starch and glyoxal, treating the hardened segment to remove residual aldehyde and shaping the segment to the required prosthetic form. The segment may be shaped on a cylindrical or tapered mandrel to provide tubular prostheses for use as veins, arteries, or urethia and may be reinforced by an exterior mesh coating of a polyester or flurocarbon plastics. Alternatively the prosthesis may be in the form of a strip which is used to reinforce the join of an anastomosis, for lining the pericardium of the heart, as a heart valve or for covering an implant e.g. a pacemaker. The prosthesis may also be in the form of a patch which is sewn to the skin over a wound, e.g. a burn, healing taking place beneath the patch which is sloughed off on completion of healing. The agent to remove residual aldehyde may be an amino acid, or an alkali salt thereof, an amine, a hydroxylamine, a peracid, a peroxide or a hypochlorite.
