Abstract

1493392 Magnetic separators ENGLISH CLAYS LOVERING POCHIN & CO Ltd 23 April 1975 [23 April 1974] 17791/74 Heading B2J Apparatus for separating magnetisable particles from a fluid containing them comprises a separation chamber 1, e.g. of non- magnetisable material, having an inlet 2 and an outlet 3; a packing 4 of cellular ferromagnetic foam material which has the form of a three-dimensional mesh or lattice having a lightweight rigid structure with interconnected voids; an electromagnet coil 5, e.g. of the superconducting type, which surrounds the chamber 1; and a ferromagnetic return frame 6, 7, 8, formed with a recess to accomodate the coil 5. The packing 4 in the chamber 1 is preferably composed of a plurality of discrete elements as shown in the Fig., and in use, it may be cleaned by flushing and by demagnetisation effected either by interrupting the current to the coil 5 or by applying a gradually decreasing alternating current to a coil.
