Abstract

1488021 Magnetic separation ENGLISH CLAYS LOVERING POCHIN & CO Ltd 17 Jan 1975 [18 Jan 1974] 2543/74 Heading B2J Apparatus for separating magnetisable particles from a fluid, e.g. a slurry of water and a mineral in which they are suspended comprises a canister I of non-magnetic material having an inlet and an outlet; a matrix of ferromagnetic material 2 within the canister, the matrix being constituted by filamentary material having substantially all its filaments aligned in a direction generally parallel to the general direction of flow of fluid through the matrix; and means such as electromagnetic coils 3 for establishing a magnetic field transverse to the said direction of flow. The filamentary material may fill about 3% to 75% of the total volume occupied by the matrix and may have a diameter in the range of from 25 to 50 Ám, the filaments being at least 5mm, preferably at least 10mm, in length. In another embodiment, the filaments are arranged in a chamber formed between two foraminous plates of non-magnetic material, e.g. a bronze wire mesh, arranged parallel to the axis of a horizontally disposed cylinder of non-magnetic material (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown).
