Abstract

1493151 Axial-flow compressors UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 9 April 1975 [10 April 1974] 14601/75 Heading F1C In a stator vane actuation system for an axialflow compressor of a gas turbine engine, the stator vanes (not shown) are divided into stages operated via arms 32 by unison rings 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, there being at least one pair of stages with unison rings, e.g. 24, 26, actuated in opposite directions by bellcrank arms 64, 66 which may be connected to the same bell-crank 36 to balance the reaction forces transmitted to the support structure 46 which comprises a bell-crank carrier 48 to which the crank arms are pivoted, supported by brackets 52, 50; unison rings 24, 26 being disposed respectively forwardly and rearwardly of their associated stages so that the vanes are rotated in the same direction; an actuator 58 and connecting rod 62, which may be one piece or comprise several inter-connected pieces, being mounted entirely on the support structure 46. Bracket 50 is flexible to reduce stresses on the carrier resulting from growth and deflection of the engine casing 10. Another balanced pair of stages operated by unison rings 28, 30 are actuated by arms 70, 72 connected to separate bell-cranks 38, 40, the pivots being as close together as possible to minimize bending moments; also, it is preferable that the balanced stages are adjacent each other. If is not possible to form all the stages into balanced pairs, there should preferably be not more than one unpaired stage.
