Portable checking and recording clocks for carrier pigeon races &c.-(a) The insertion of a token provides for the release of the token receptacle, which can then be manually rotated into position for the insertion of the next token; (b) a pencil is arranged to be drawn across and cancel the paper strip when the cover fastenings and seals are tampered with; and (c), the clock is stopped by hard shaking designed to accelerate the rate of the clockwork movement, a spring member being forced into engagement with the compensating balance wheel. According to (a) the insertion of a token 1, Fig. 3, through the slot 2 in the cover 3 into a division of the token receptacle 4 forces a projection 5 into engagement with an arm 6 of a disk 7. The sleeve of the disk 7 has a groove 20 with which engages one end of a bell-crank lever 8, and by the depression of the disk along the squared upper end of the shaft 15 and against the action of a spring 16 the other end of the lever 8 is moved out of the path of a cam 11 on the cross shaft 10. By now rotating the shaft 10 by means of a handle, the shaft 15 is rotated through worm-and-wheel gearing 13, 14. On the upper end of this shaft is a pinion 18 in gear with a toothed rim 19 of the member 4. When the operating handle has made one revolution, the token receptacle has been moved into a position in which the next division is under the opening 2 in the cover, ready for the insertion of another token. In this position, the shaft 10 has moved so that the cam 11 allows the lever 8 to move back under the action of a spring and the disk 7 is lifted, an arm 6 snapping into a recess in the member 4, locking it in this position until released by the insertion of a fresh token. (b) The clock is placed inside a cover for protection, with lead seals and locking bolts. One bolt 23, Fig. 6, has a shoulder 24 which presses against a crank lever 26 rotatable about a pivot 25 and connected to a sliding bar 27 carrying at its lower end a pivotally - mounted pencil holder 29. When the cover is closed, the shoulder engages the lever 26 moving the bar 27 down until the free end of the member 29 is held on one side by a stop. Tampering with the cover withdraws the bolts, releases the lever 26, and allows the slide bar 27 to be pressed up by a spring. This releases the member 29 from the stop and permits a spring 34 to move its lower end across the paper, the pencil 35 leaving a stroke to cancel the strip. (c) If the clock is shaken to quicken rate of movement, a pin 38 on an arm 40 of the spindle 39 provided with weighted arms is rotated into engagement with one end of a spring lever 41, the other end of the lever being thereby moved into the path of thecompensating balance wheel 42 to stop the clock, as shown in Fig. 11.
