Abstract

1492464 Processing radioactive waste UNITED STATES ENERGY RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ADMINISTRATION 24 Oct 1975 [28 Jan 1975] 43700/75 Heading G6R In the calcination of an acidic aqueous radioactive waste solution containing sodium nitrate by injection into a heated fluidized bed, particle agglomeration in the fluidized bed is prevented by the addition of elemental iron to the solution before calcining. The sodium nitrate is converted into a compound which does not melt at the calcination temperature which may be from 400‹ to 1000‹ C. Acid may be added to the solution before the addition of the iron in order to maintain acidity. The iron is preferably added in the form of filings or powder.
