1492419 Conveying sheets to alternative paths POLYGRAPH LEIPZIG KOMBINAT FUR POLYGRAPHISCHE MASCHINEN UND AUSTRUSTUNGEN VEB 26 Aug 1975 [29 Aug 1974] 35165/75 Heading B8R In a bookbinding machine, folded sheets 12 are fed along a linear path defined by nip belts 1, 2 until they are pushed into open grippers 18 articulated to relatively slowly moving chains 14, the grippers closing, as associated rollers move off a control track 20, and feeding the sheets over a deflecting member 4 to a stack 22. Incorrectly folded sheets cause photoelectric scanners 31, 31<SP>1</SP> and 32, 32<SP>1</SP>, which are separated by the length of a correctly folded sheet, to be simultaneously blocked, this triggering a circuit which releases a sheet brake 24. The brake momentarily retards the faulty sheet, under the action of a cam wheel (28), Fig. 2 (not shown), causing it to be pulled from its associated gripper 18 and then be fed past the deflecting member 4 to a deposit 33, either by the belts 1, 2 or by the succeeding gripper which pushes its rear edge. Test sheets can be similarly deposited under the action of a manual switch or lever. The brake may have rubber or synthetic material sheet engaging members, suckers, abutments or a magnet and counterplate arrangement. Frictional sheet accelerators 13 are provided.
