Abstract
1491716 Contact breakers WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 26 Oct 1974 46410/74 Heading H1N In a circuit breaker, the resetting (i.e. contact closing) mechanism includes cylinder 60, piston 59 and piston-rod 63; piston-rod 63 extends out of the cylinder so that its transverse cross-section is exposed to ambient air pressure; in use the cylinder on both sides of the piston is maintained filled with gas at the same high pressure so that a force driving the piston and rod to a "reset position" (shown in Fig. 1) is produced because the high pressure acts on surface areas of different extent on the two sides of the piston, and to close contacts 5 one side 71 of the piston is exhausted via a valve 75. When it is required to reset the breaker mechanism, 3-way valve 75 is rotated to exhaust the right hand region 71 of the cylinder, whereupon the high pressure gas in the opposite end of the cylinder moves the piston 59, piston-rod 63 and via the mechanical linkage of lever 69 and shaft 31, the movable contacts 2a, 3a, 4a. Lever 69 is held in its contact closed position by toggle 19 and lever 13. Upset of the toggle is by current flowing in coils 52, 53 acting on permanent magnet 11. Slot 67 in piston-rod 63 provides a lost motion connection to lever 69 permitting opening movement of the lever 69. The gas used in cylinder 60 may be SF 6 that also extinguishes the arc produced on contact opening. An auxiliary switch 44 is also operated by movement of lever 29. The mechanical linkage between piston 59 and contact sets 5 may be replaced by a pneumatic linkage.
