Abstract

1491711 Control of D.C. motors ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 18 Oct 1974 [19 Oct 1973] 45161/74 Heading H2J [Also in Division B7] A motor vehicle steering system comprises a gearbox having a plurality of forward gears and a reverse gear, and an electric motor for influencing steering linkage movement in a direction corresponding to a manually steered direction, at least the lowest forward gear and reverse gear, but not at least the highest forward gear, having a switching arrangement associated therewith which is actuated on engagement of one of the associated gears, the motor only being energizable when said arrangement is actuated. As illustrated in Fig. 1 switches 14, 15 are closed upon first gear and reverse gear, respectively, being engaged. With one of these switches closed and upon closing switch 18 or 19 in dependence on the movement of contact 20 by the steering wheel, the appropriate solenoid 16, 17 will actuate its contact 21 or 23 to energize electric motor 10 which assists the manual steering. In the system of Fig. 2, switch 32 is closed by engaging of first and reverse gear, switch 30 is closed by selection of second gear and switch 31 is closed by selection of third gear. The fourth gear has no switch associated therewith. As a higher gear is selected so the maximum torque developed by the motor is reduced by closure of switches 34, 35, 36 which determine whether none, one or both of resistors 37, 38 are connected in series with the motor. Alternatively these resistors may be replaced by a variable resistor whose resistance is caused to vary in dependence on the vehicle speed, e.g. by a centrifugally operated adjusting device. In a further system similar to that of Fig. 1 the operating current of the motor is adjusted in inverse proportion to the voltage produced by a tachogenerator (51) responsive to vehicle speed, this voltage being applied to a differential amplifier (61) controlling a transistor (62) in series with the motor, Fig. 4 (not shown). Feedback of motor current to the amplifier (61) ensures constant current operation for the existing vehicle speed.
