Abstract
1491359 Ballasting BVS 4 July 1975 [26 July 1974] 28386/75 Heading B7A A constant-lift buoy, Fig. 2, for supporting a load in water, comprises a rigid shell 1 open at the bottom 10 which has means 52, 53, 54, for maintaining a constant volume of gas inside the shell, means 61, 62, 63, 64, for permitting the escape of gas to reduce the lift, and load engaging hooks 3. In use, the buoy is supplied with gas from a pipe-laying barge through a pipe 5, control valve 55 and a reducing valve 51. The float 54 opens and closes the valve 53 to maintain a constant volume of gas in the buoy. Gas pressure in a jack 64 holds the valve 61 on seat 62 to prevent the escape of gas. The weight of a bell housing 33 holds the jaws 3 closed through toggle mechanism 31. When a pipe 4 reaches the bottom, pressure in pipe 5 is reduced from the barge. This causes the release of a coupling 56. Valve 61 is now no longer held on its seat by jack 64 so air escapes through the pipe 6. As water rises inside the buoy the bell housing 33, which is full of gas, rises and opens the jaws 3. The speed of ascent of the buoy is reduced because only gas above the level of the pipe 6 is retained. Gas for the buoy may be generated on the buoy itself.
