Abstract

1491070 Trailer couplings PAULSTRA 13 June 1975 [13 June 1974 28 May 1975] 25403/75 Heading B7T A trailer coupling, Fig. 1, comprises an elastomeric layer 3 compressively prestressed between a ball element 1 and a cowl 4 rigidly and detachably retained in a socket element 5. The cowl 4 includes a flange 7 which engages within the socket element 5. Relative angular movement of the ball element 1 and socket element 5 causes deformation in shear of the elastomeric layer 3. The coupling is said to inhibit rolling, pitching and swaying movements of a trailer coupled by the coupling to a towing vehicle. In a modification, the cowl 23, Fig. 6, of the coupling may be provided with projections 24 for engagement in spaces within the socket element. In a further modification, the socket element of the coupling may be provided with a spring-loaded pin for engagement in an opening in the cowl of the coupling.
