Abstract

1490873 Numbering apparatus G L STRICKLAND 19 Dec 1974 [19 Dec 1973] 54929/74 Heading B6C A sequential numbering device which is especially suited for the provision of numbers one-half to two inches high on a web made up of separable sheets to serve as invoices or warehouse labels, comprises a plurality of parallel printing cylinders, each cylinder carrying printing wheels equally spaced around its circumference, the printing wheels rotating in radial slots with their axes transverse to the cylinder axis and indexing means for advancing the printing wheels to provide consecutive numbers on the sheets. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, printing stations 10 to 14 are provided for a web 15 passing at each station between a printing cylinder 33 and an impression cylinder 39; each cylinder 33 has ten radial slots (65), Fig. 4 (not shown) extending the length of the cylinder and accommodating printing wheels 34, Fig. 3, carrying numerals 0 to 9. In this embodiment the cylinder 33 at station 10 also carries numerals 0 to 9 on its peripheral surface for printing units; thus station 10 prints units and tens, station 11 the hundreds and so on. Synchronous drive for the cylinders 33 is provided, Fig. 2 (not shown) and a ratcheting device 90 for each cylinder provides for indexing the printing wheels appropriately; thus sequential numbers are printed on the sheets 15a making up web 15, Fig. 3. The numbers may be colourcoded by suitable choice of ink in inkers 45. If the sheets to be printed are longer than each printing cylinder may only carry five wheels 34, indexing at stations 11 to 14 only taking place at half the frequency, and the first cylinder having no numerals on its periphery.
