Abstract

1490762 Modified unsaturated polyesters BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 14 March 1975 [15 March 1974] 10700/75 Heading C3R Modified unsaturated polyesters are produced by esterifying maleic acid or anhydride with a tri- or higher-hydric alcohol, the ratio of reactants being such that there are 4 to 8 carboxyl groups or potential carboxyl groups for every 3 hydroxyl groups, reacting the esterified product with a monohydric alcohol and subsequently or simultaneously with a cyclopentadiene. Dicyclopentadiene may be used under conditions such that it yields the monomer. The examples describe reacting maleic anhydride with glycerol and then reacting with ethyl alcohol, optionally with benzyl alcohol, and dicyclopentadiene. The modified unsaturated polyester may be coated on steel plates after addition of bitumen and the usual peroxide/accelerator systems.
