Abstract

1490651 Emergency exits, doors WHITE WELDING & MFG INC 16 Jan 1975 1941/75 Heading E1J and E2A A means for the emergency opening of a door from the side from which it is not normally opened is provided. The door is ordinarily opened by pulling handle 50 to rotate shaft 44 and so release the bolts on its ends from the keepers 30. When closed the handle 50 is held by retainer 52. In an emergency the door may be opened from the other side by means of a mechanism (see Fig. 3) which detaches retainer 52 from the door, forcing it outwards and so pushing the handle 50 thus unfastening the door. This mechanism comprises a back plate 64 of the retainer which has an internally threaded hub 70 projecting into the door. This hub 70 engages a threaded end portion 82 of a shank 78 to the other end of which, on the inside of the door, is attached the emergency release handle 80. The shank 78 is secured against longitudinal movement by means of a strap 90 which is fixed to the door and engages an annular groove 88 in the shank 78. Rotation of the handle 80 thus forces hub 70 out of the door which is thus unlocked. Light may be admitted to the interior of the container sealed by the door by means 94 comprising a plastics rod running the breadth of the door and terminating near the emergency handle 80 to guide a trapped person to it. The inside face of the rod may be shaped into an arrow to indicate the direction in which the handle is to be turned.
