Abstract

1489183 Lamps HANOVIA LAMPS Ltd 17 Dec 1974 [11 Oct 1973] 47547/73 Heading F4R A radiation device for drying printing inks on paper or the like comprises a housing 4 in which is mounted a radiator 2, e.g. an ultra-violet emitting arc discharge tube, and a reflector arrangement 5 which in the open position, shown dotted, reflects radiation in a required direction, the reflectors 5 having ducts which convey cooling fluid through the device, and there being provided a monitoring and controlling arrangement comprising a temperature controller which senses the temperature of the cooling fluid as it leaves the device and which controls fluid flow through the device in response thereto for maintaining the operating temperature of the radiator 2 at an optimum value. A further coolant duct 10 including a ceramic finned heat exchanger element 9 may be provided above the arc tube 2. The coolant air may be sucked or blown through the duets by a fan or blower whose operation rate is controlled by the temperature sensor, e.g. a thermostat or thermistor. In order to protect the stock being irradiated from ignition in the event of a malfunction, the reflectors 5 may pivot about longitudinal axes 7 to a closed position (shown in full lines) in which the housing opening 8 is closed off. An additional reflector 11 may be provided to assist in the warming up of the arc tube when the reflectors 5 are in the closed position.
