Abstract
1488762 Isostatic hot pressing GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 3 Feb 1976 [18 Feb 1975] 6724/75 Heading B5A [Also in Division C7] In isostatically hot-pressing metal, alloy, ceramic or cermet powders, granules, fibres, shot, platelets or precompacts in an evacuated glass container to the exterior of which the isostatic pressure is applied, a deformable metal or alloy sheath which does not react with the glass is interposed between the charge and the interior of the glass container. The sheath preferably is formed of a metal or alloy sheet but a metal powder which is compacted during the pressing may also be used. In pressing cylindrical bodies a glass container 1 is lined with a sleeve 2 of Ti sheet, the bottom is charged with Ti alloy powder 4, the sleeved portion 3 charged with 90 Ti-6 Al-4 V alloy shot and the open end 4 with the same Ti alloy powder. After evacuating, isostatic pressing was effected at 900‹ C. and 13,000 p.s.i. Metal discs may be used instead of the powder to seal the lower and upper ends of the charge to be compacted. The metal or alloy sheath may be removed after compaction or it may remain as a cladding. In some cases the sheath may be a metal or alloy which melts and flows at the temperature of compaction so that an infiltrated product results, e.g. an Ag sheath is used for pressing a ceramic powder to form an Ag infiltrated ceramic.
