Abstract

1488182 Bonding particles to aluminium MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 14 Jan 1975 1574/75 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C7 and G2] A substrate of aluminium or a substrate having an aluminium surface is coated with particulate material bonded to the aluminium by a layer of aluminium hydroxyoxide formed in situ, and the particulate material has an average size of 0.05 to 3000Á, a melting point above 150‹C, and a solubility of less than 0.1 p.b.w. per 100 p.b.w. of water. The bonding layer is formed by exposing the particle coated substrate to an oxidising atmosphere containing water, e.g. by dipping in water, or exposing to steam or a watervapour saturated oxidising gas. An additive to the particles may increase their adherence. Suitable particles may be cubic, acicular, irregular or fibrous and may be organic, inorganic, photosensitive, conductive, non-conductive photoconductive (TiO 2 or ZnO) or magnetic (gamma-Fe 2 O 3 ). Other particles specifically mentioned are: oxides of In, Si, Mg, Cr, Zr, Mn, Ca. Y, Al, Sb, Bi, Ba, Ce, V, Be; titanates of Ba. Li; ZnS; CaF 2 ; CaWO 4 ; 1, 5 dichloroanthraquinone; NaBiO 3 ; CdS; lead sulphide; FeS; cotton fibres; zinc rosinate; asbestos, clay e.g. bentonite; copper powder; nylon; P.T.F.E.; copper phthalocyanine; anthraquinone; kaolinite. Suitable additives are oxides of Ca, Ba, Mg, Be. Zn, NaOH, CH 3 CO 2 Na, NaCl, NaHSO 4 , Ba(NO 3 ) 2 , Mg(NO 3 ) 2 , 6H 2 O, Sr(NO 3 ) 2 , Ca(NO 3 ) 2 . 4H 2 O, CaF 2 , CaCl 2 , CaSO 4 , Ca(C 2 H 3 O 2 ) 2 , CaCO 3 , BaCO 3 , NaHCO 3 , NH 4 NO 4 , or a mixture CaO and NaOH. The substrate is preferably Al sheet, but also includes Al alloys with Cu, Si and Mn and bases coated with Al or Al alloys e.g. plastics film on which Al is vapourdeposited. Many materials and coating conditions are specifically described (Examples 1 to 86).
