Abstract

1488027 Fluid-pressure servomotor systems K-H THOMAS [trading as LANGEN & CO] 28 Nov 1974 [13 Dec 1973 9 April 1974] 51604/74 Heading G3P [Also in Division B7] A hydraulic follow-up control system for servoassisted vehicle steering gear, comprises a control valve having two valve pistons 28, 29, Fig. 4, slidably mounted in a valve body 27 and operable by means including a common actuating lever 35 for alternatively establishing communication between the working chambers (13, 14), Fig. 1 (not shown), of a servomotor (8) and a pressure source or an exhaust, the pressures in the servomotor working chambers (13, 14) being transmitted to respective reaction chambers 55, 56, Fig. 4, so as to act on reaction faces of the respective valve pistons 29, 28 against apposing forces of respective biasing valve springs 46, 38, the system being characterized in that each valve spring 38, 46 is precompressed, in use, when the actuating lever 35 is in its central position, and in that above a predetermined limit of the actuating force applied by the actuating lever 35 at least part of thrust of valve spring 38 or 46 is taken by the actuating lever 35 whereas below said predetermined limit at least part of the thrust of the valve spring 38 or 46 is taken by a shoulder 40 or 48 of the valve body 27. In the control valve of Fig. 4, power assistance is not provided until the actuating force applied by the actuating lever 35 is sufficient to lift one of spring retainers 39, 47 off the associated shoulder 40, 48. In the system of Fig. 5, (not shown) the actuator (35') is slidably mounted in a valve body (27') at a location between two coaxially-arranged valve pistons (28', 29'). In a modified form of control valve, Fig. 6 the spring retainer 47" is partially supported by an additional spring 97 having one end resting on a shoulder 95 of the valve body 27".
