Abstract

1450436 Power steering mechanism K H THOMAS [trading as LANGEN & CO] 18 Dec 1973 [18 Dec 1972] 58561/73 Heading B7H In power steering mechanism which is supplied with fluid by a pressure source 32 including an accumulator and comprises a servo motor 12 connected to a torque output member 1 and controlled by two valve pistons 4, 5 which are mounted in the output member 1, are provided with reaction faces 24, 25 subjected to the pressures in the working chambers 16, 17 of the servo motor, and are actuated through tappets 6, 7 by an input member 8 coupled to the output member 1 through prestressed springs 28, 29, the servomotor chambers 16, 17 are connected in the neutral position of the valve pistons 4, 5 to a reservoir through a pressure-limiting valve 37. Pressure fluid from the. source 32 leaking past the valve pistons. 4, 5 is..maintained by the pressure-limiting valve 37 at an adjustable minimum level to avoid the occurance of negative pressures downstream of the-valve pistons.. If the valve pistons 4, 5 have negative lap a pressure reducing valve, Fig. 2 (not shown), may be arranged to. supply fluid from the source 32 to the servo motor chambers 16, 17 at a pressure lower than the setting of the pressure-limiting valve 37. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the valvepistons are located crosswise and eccentrically in a rotatable valve body constituting the torque output member, and the pressure-limiting valve is arranged within the valve body.
