Abstract
1487454 Detecting gas entrainment, ultrasonically WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 20 Oct 1975 [23 Oct 1974] 42904/75 Heading G1G Gas entrainment in a liquid, e.g. at the onset of boiling, is detected by monitoring the second harmonic of an ultrasonic signal propagated through the liquid. The fundamental may also be monitored to indicate the concentration of entrained gas. In monitoring the liquid sodium coolant of a nuclear reactor, the radioactivity is also monitored, any increase being correlated with changes in the fundamental and second harmonic to indicate a structural failure of a fuel element. Each fuel assembly has its own monitoring system.
