1487398 Measuring rotary speed electrically R BUCK 17 Sept 1974 [17 Sept 1973] 40584/74 Heading G1N A method of monitoring rotary speed in which an A.C. signal a of frequency representative of speed is provided by e.g. a tachogenerator includes the steps of; using the pulses of a pulse train c, derived from the signal a, to reset repetitively to zero the output e of an integrator 1, using the pulses of the pulse train c repetitively to set or reset a bi-stable circuit 2, comparing the integral with a reference voltage in a comparator 4 and producing a response pulse f if the reference voltage is exceeded; passing the response pulse to reset or set the bi-stable circuit and deriving an output signal from the change of state of the bi-stable circuit, produced by the response pulse, to indicate overspeeding. Preferably the A.C. signal a is squared up in a Schmitt trigger 5 and differentiated 6 to produce spikes for resetting the integrator which integrates a constant current from a generator 10. To avoid problems arising from simultaneous provision of a set and a reset pulse to the bi-stable it has a dominant set (or reset)-input. By means of a storage element 7 e.g. a capacitor the duration of the response pulse is greater than the time for which the integral exceeds the reference voltage.
