Abstract

1486842 Seaming non-metallic sheet material LUCAS BATTERIES Ltd 10 Jan 1975 [15 Feb 1974] 6984/74 Heading B5K [Also in Division H1] Apparatus for use in the manufacture of electric storage batteries comprises a base 12 to support a thermoplastic battery box 13, a die part 21 carried by a support member 26 and adapted to receive a thermoplastic auxiliary member 15, Fig. 3, to be secured to an external wall 14 of the box 13, means 24 for moving the part 21 linearly relative to the member 26 towards and away from the base 12 and in a first direction parallel to the base 12, a heater 33 carried by the member 26 and movable in the first direction, and means 28 for moving the heater 33 linearly relative to the member 26 in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction and into the path of movement of the part 21, the arrangement being such that, in use, to seal the member 15 to the wall 14, the member 15 is moved with the part 21 into engagement with the heater 33 and the heater 33 is moved into engagement with the wall 14, whereafter the heater 33 is withdrawn so that the heated portions of the member 15 and the wall 14 can be pressed together. The member 15, Fig. 3, has a comb-like projection 17 to be secured to the wall 14 and around which a channel 18 and a peripheral skirt 19 extend, molten material from the projection 17 and the wall 14 flowing into the channel 18 during sealing. In operation, the box 13 is clamped on the base 12, the member 15 is engaged in a cavity 22 in the part 21 and a piston-and-cylinder arrangement 28 moves the heater 33 upwardly until further movement is limited by a stop 34. A piston-and-cylinder arrangement 24 moves the part 21 until the projection 17 engages the heater 33 and further movement causes the heater 33 and a piston 32 on which it is mounted to move relative to the support 26 until a projection 35 on the heater 33 engages the wall 14. After melting of the surfaces contacting the plate 33, the part 21 is retracted and the piston 32, of a piston-and-cylinder arrangement 31 retracts the heater 33. The arrangement 28 lowers the heater 33 and then the arrangement 24 is re-operated to move the melted projection 17 into engagement with the melted portion of the wall 14. The part 21 is retracted after solidification of these melted portions. The position of the member 26 is adjustable by a hand wheel 36 to alter the position, relative to the base, at which the member 15 is sealed to the wall 14. A further heater and die part carried by a further support may be provided to seal a second auxiliary member to a wall opposite to the wall 14. The member 15 may provide means for mounting the battery box on a road vehicle or may provide a lifting device.
