1486676 Disposable water-absorbent articles ROUSSEL UCLAF 20 Feb 1975 [20 Feb 1974] 7234/75 Heading ASR [Also in Division B5] Disposable water-absorbent articles for use as nappies, absorbent pads, particularly but not exclusively for babies, comprise a waterpermeable, flexible, non-woven envelope containing a water-absorbent inner portion which comprises a water absorbent support material treated, at least in part with (a) a cross-linked copolymer of an α, #-unsaturated carboxylic acid on an acetal of formula: in which n is 0, 1 or 2 and (b) an alkaline material. In one embodiment the absorbent support material comprises shredded cellulose pulp to which a mixture of cross-linked copolymer and alkaline material are added in powdered form and in an alternative embodiment the support material comprises one or more cellulose sheet layers, at least one of which is treated with a mixture when the copolymer contacts an aqueous liquid it forms an acaidic gel, neutralised by the alkaline material, which is highly absorbent so the surface of the articles which contacts the wearer's skin is kept dry. Examples are given of the position and the composition of the cellulose sheet(s) in the construction of the absorbent support materials. The treatment of the support material is effected by spraying, sprinkling or soaking. The cross-linked copolymer is viscaron A-600-1 (R.T.M.) and the alkaline material is e.g. sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, magnesium carbonate.
