Abstract

1486322 Solvent extraction of zinc SVENSKA RAYON AB 30 Oct 1974 [31 Oct 1973 28 Jan 1974] 47035/74 Heading C1A Zinc is removed from an aqueous effluent obtained in rayon manufacture by a method which comprises:- (a) adjusting the free sulphuric acid content of the effluent to less than 30 g/l, (b) subjecting the solution to liquid-liquid extraction with a solution of a diorgano-phosphorous oxyacid in an organic solvent to form a separate phase, whereby the zinc and the diorganophosphorous oxyacid form a compound which is more soluble in the organic solvent than in the aqueous effluent, and separating the organic and aqueous solutions and (c) contacting the separated organic solvent with an aqueous sulphuric acid solution to split the zinc/diorganophosphorous oxyacid compound and redissolve the zinc in the aqueous solution to form zinc sulphate and separating the zinc-free organic solvent and diorganophosphorous oxyacid from the aqueous solution and returning the organic solvent to extraction step (a), and returning the zinc sulphate to the rayon manufacturing process. The diorganophosphorous oxyacid preferably has the general formula:- The aqueous stripping solution in step (b) is preferably sulphuric acid. When iron is also present it may be separated from the zinc by using an aqueous solution containing 50-200 g/l of sulphuric acid in a first stripping process in step (b) to remove the zinc and subsequently stripping the iron with an aqueous solution of 500-1000 g/l of sulphuric acid.
